Commissioner, Public Works Role and Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Commissioner, Public Works is responsible for providing strategic direction and overall leadership of the Public Works Department which includes Operations & Services and Capital Infrastructure Services.
The portfolio has oversight for water and wastewater facilities, waste management, natural heritage and forestry services, York Region Transit, road user safety, transportation systems, and traffic operations. As a member of the Corporate Senior Management Team, you will ensure strategic initiatives support short and long-term growth management interests of the Region. Through innovation and operational excellence, you will continue to modernize service delivery standards with metrics and defined outcomes to support the delivery of public works services that meet the changing needs of clients and communities.
You leverage data and digital technologies to optimize service delivery across all service areas and enhance the customer experience to become a leading sustainable, digital-by-default service delivery organization. As a leader you are known as a strong relationship builder who is dedicated to developing and supporting your team.
Are you the leader we are looking for?
In addition to your post graduate degree in in Engineering, Planning, Public Administration or related discipline, you bring a minimum of 10 years of progressive work experience in the management of a large, complex public works and/or utility project or similar operation, preferably with experience in the public sector. You have considerable experience leading, negotiating, and managing large-scale procurements and related service provider contracts.
Demonstrating substantive leadership capability you can develop and convey a compelling vision, advancing a strategic agenda across a complex portfolio. You have proven business, financial and political acumen and a track record of operational leadership realizing measurable results when fulfilling transformational initiatives.
